Sound from different devices in Windows 10

If like me, you work on the computer and often use a headset to make calls, but in between calls you don’t want to wear the headset but it would be great to listen to music. The problem is, you start up Spotify and play your playlist and the sound is still coming through the headset. It doesn’t have to though. There is a way to tell Windows 10 which sound device to use for which application.

With the application running, right click on the sound icon in the system tray and select Open Sound Settings.

Within the sound settings screen that will come up, underneath the output and input sound devices you should find a selection for Advanced Sound options. Click on the App volume device preferences.

You should then get a screen with the master volume and device at the top, then underneath a list of apps that output sound. For each application listed you can set an individual volume preference as well as the output and input devices you want the application to use.

It should look something like this.

Against Spotify (or whatever app you want) you can tell it to use the speakers instead of the headset. This way you can limit the headset use to calls and gaming and use speakers for music or watching youtube or anything else.

It should remember the preferences for next time to, so once it’s set you shouldn’t have to set it again unless you want to change the output device or specific volume.
