I was at a beach early one morning, some time ago now. I had arrived for first light and stayed through the sunrise. This beach-side town was very active and at first light there was already people active on this beach and by sunrise it was a veritable hive of activity. I was there taking photographs of the sun as it rose over the ocean, trying to capture the silhouette of one of the container ships in front of the rising sun and just generally seeing what other compositions I could find for an interesting sunrise photo.
It’s worth noting that sunrise isn’t very forgiving in that you only get a few minutes before the sun has risen, so if you don’t already have a composition in mind then you could well miss the chance.
Anyway, I’d taken some photos and was sitting on a bench watching as the sun rose a little higher. Admiring the swimmers and surfers as they plunged into the cold water that I didn’t dare enter. I was sitting there, minding my own business, enjoying the morning sun and the sunrise I’d just witnessed when I was interrupted by a voice saying “excuse me sir” or something along those lines.
I turned and was a little taken aback to see two police officers standing behind me. We had a conversation in which they told me someone had called them about someone taking photos. I asked if that was some sort of crime, to which they responded…
