Photography tip — About the angle

How often have you come across a scene you wanted to photograph in the moment so you get out the camera (or phone), frame and take the shot and then move on. How often is that shot taken by holding the camera at eye level such as looking through a viewfinder or looking at the screen?

The photography tip for today is to think about the angle of the photo you’re about to take. We all see things all day every day from eye level and sometimes the easiest way to make a photo stand out is to shoot it from a different angle or viewpoint.

Take this photo for example. It’s a cluster of mushrooms growing on the ground after some rainy weather.

Mushrooms growing on the forest floor.

There isn’t much special about this shot which is taken from a higher angle similar to the view you would have if you crouched down to look at them. But the forest floor is made of dead leaves and sticks and the mushrooms themselves blend in to the background because that’s all the background is from this angle.

However, after taking the shot I thought for a moment about why it didn’t have the interesting look that had prompted me to pick up the camera in the first place. The answer of how to fix it was simple.

Get down lower.

So, I put the camera down to the ground itself and using the LCD to compose and focus took another shot.
