Photo manipulation tutorial

A GIMP tutorial on creating a photo manipulation of an imaginary world inside a mobile phone.

Sometimes you see photo manipulations and you think to yourself that it would be cool to do something similar. Well it’s not that hard to learn how to do some interesting looking photo manipulations and we’ll look at how to do one today using free software.

I’ll be using software called GIMP for this, the unfortunate name is an acronym for GNU image manipulation program and it’s a free and open source software for image editing. There isn’t any reason you couldn’t use Photoshop or any other image editor that supports the same sort of features.

This is the sort of thing we’ll create in this basic tutorial.

To start with, let’s get an image of a mobile phone sitting on a desk. It’s easy enough to take a photo like that or you could find one on a stock photo site. Taking a photo with a camera is probably the easiest and best option.

Open your photo in GIMP.

With the mobile phone photo opened in GIMP, we now want to open a landscape photo that…
