Nobody likes my images, why do I bother?

Are you even a photographer if nobody likes your images?

A short while ago the PetaPixel site published an article You Are Still a Photographer, Even If No One Likes Your Images. The headline spoke to me and I wanted to put down some of my own thoughts about the topic.

I’ve certainly had those moments where I’ve taken a photo, put in the editing time to make it look just how I want it to look and then been excited to share it onto social media or another photo sharing site, only to be left hearing the chirp of crickets and not much else. Maybe a like or two, no comments and with the pace of social media these days it’s left in the dust by the “algorithm” in no time, never to be heard from again.

It’s kinda demoralising and it can leave you wondering “why the hell am I doing this?”

It’s a fair question.

Why are you doing it?

It’s a simple question that feels like it should be a simple answer, but maybe if you stop to think about it, the answer isn’t quite as simple as it would seem.

If you answered something along the lines of “because I enjoy doing it” or “because it makes me happy” or something. Then you should follow it up with the question…. Why does it matter then if…
