Is constructive criticism a help or a hindrance for photographers?

No doubt you’ve seen on social networks people asking for constructive criticism (CC) on images they post. Perhaps you’ve asked yourself. As with everything these days it seems that asking for CC is something of a double edged sword… especially in online communities with people of a wide variety of skill levels. Everyone has their bit to say and ultimately it’s up to the original poster to determine what’s constructive and what’s not.

Sadly, in every group it seems there must be some that can’t help but forget the constructive part of term. These people tend to just criticism without anything constructive to say and unfortunately it can mean that you need a thick skin when asking for CC.

That being said, if you are okay to possibly receive some comments from the nonconstructive, then very often there will be plenty to be gained from taking on board the constructive comments that people make. Many people genuinely want to help and some of those are in a position to have more experience or knowledge and their advice can be the best thing since sliced bread to help you improve as a photographer.
