Linux gaming has come a long way over the years and while it still might not be considered as a platform by many game developers (despite many high profile game engines supporting the creation of games on Linux), there is still many games out there that run natively and many that run with the help of projects like Wine and Valve’s Proton.
Some game developers have in the past tried natively supporting Linux for one of their titles, and then dropped support with their next release. For example, did you know that The Witcher 2 : Assassin of Kings runs natively on Linux?
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R games were never intended to run on Linux. It’s not something that GSC considered or would consider doing. Back when those games were developed it’s understandable why that would have been the case as gaming on Linux back then was nowhere near what it is today. It’s worth noting that their upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 title, which is being developed using Unreal Engine and aimed to be multi-platform (consoles). Unreal Engine can run natively on Linux and compile and output games for Linux systems.. so could we see native Linux support for S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2?
