Blender is an incredibly powerful tool for creating 3D art, animation, visual effects and more. It can even be used as a video editor. It has some powerful tools for creating art and special effects in 3D with node based tools for creating materials and has been used for many movies, television and game scenarios over the years.
I’ve spent some time recently learning how to use Blender and attempting to create some 3D artwork using it. In fact one of the first things I created was an entry for a challenge run by CGBoost. The topic was mythology. It was a huger challenge for me being reasonably new to Blender and I wasn’t really happy with the end result but I learned a lot about using Blender by doing so. I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface of what I need to know and learn to really be able to make top notch art but it was a good experience anyway.
Since then I’ve started my own project and have been working through the process of modelling and sculpting and putting together a 3d scene. One thing I’ve come across related to volumetric lights and how they interact with other materials I wanted to share.
The goal for this particular lighting was to have light coming in through tinted windows and catch dust particles/smoke in the air to create a volumetric beam of light from the window. So I modeled the wall, added space for windows and then added a spotlight on the other side of the window space. I adjusted the spotlight angle and intensity. Finally I added another cube around the…
