Can AI produce stock photos as good as stock photo sites?
The more I read about AI image generation taking over the job of photographers the more I wonder how much truth there is to it. After all, when photography started, painters claimed it would ruin their art. Did it? Do painters still paint?
Bearing in mind that these AI image generation tools must be trained on a set of data in order to do what they do to produce an image, so without photographers and artists in general they wouldn’t be able to generate much of anything at all. Still, let’s have a look at what AI produces on a few subjects to see if it’s a viable replacement for stock photos.
Here is a photo of the Sydney Opera House. Let’s see what I get if I ask AI to generate a photo of the Sydney Opera House.
I don’t think any of these really could claim to be a photograph of the opera house. I mean, looking at them you would know what it’s trying to be (if you’re familiar with the landmark) but none of them are correct. Despite being huge…
